well now... i wonder if that would be feasable without intonation? which is actually a fabulous illustration of the failing of the written word!!

(i also imagine it would be particularly difficult for those of us who communicate effectively with long words which are heavy with meaning)

So luckily they were able to communicate directly and have access to intonation and facial cues/body language.
